Taysom Hill has always been an interesting figure on the New Orleans Saints roster.

He can play quarterback, but is more of a gadget player who can run the Wildcat and also make noise on special teams.

Hill had a shot to be named the starting quarterback this year, but was beat out by Jameis Winston.

The job then went to Trevor Siemian once Winston went down with a season-ending injury.

But poor play from Siemian could mean Hill finally gets a shot as the full-time starter.

Anything is possible in the Sean Payton offense.

Hill is in the news today because he and the Saints agreed on a unique contract extension where the total pay is unknown as of right now.

So he signed a four-year deal that could be worth anywhere between $40-95 million depending on the position he plays.

But what he does know for sure is that he will get $22.5 million guaranteed.

That is the key figure for him in this deal.

Figuring Out A Role For Taysom Hill

Hill being the starting quarterback for the next four seasons is entirely possible if he gets a shot with the full-time job this year.

However, him entering 2022 as the sure starter would require quite the finish to this season.

Hill’s main experience as a passer came in 2020 when he had 88 completions for four touchdowns.

The Saints did go 3-1, but Drew Brees was still on the team.

2021 saw the breakout of Winston, sending Hill back to his hybrid role once again.

What this deal ensures is that Hill will be compensated properly if the Saints do put him at a position, quarterback, where players earn more money.

He can thank his agent for that creative thinking.

It is tough to think of anyone else who fits this role, but a quarterback like Lamar Jackson could demand extra money because of his rushing abilities.

While this deal does set precedent, it will take some special talents to come up with such a contract in the future.
