Norwegian Air Registered 71% Increase in Passenger Traffic in December

Norwegian Air has announced that the company has served more than 930,000 passengers during the last month of 2021.

According to a press release issued by Norwegian Air, the number of passengers who flew with the airline increased by 71.3 per cent in December compared to the same month in 2020.

The data shows that a total of 931,917 passengers flew with the Norwegian last month, whereas in the same period in 2020, only 129,664 passengers flew with the airline, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“In December, Norwegian carried 931,917 passengers, compared with 129,664 in December 2020. The load factor was 71.3 percent,” the statement of the Norwegian reads.

Even though the flights scheduled with Norwegian had to operate with a lower capacity to prevent the further spread of the Omicron variant, which has been spreading rapidly within the EU, the airline was still able to serve a large number of passengers.

Commenting on the positive results that the company has registered in December, the CEO of Norwegian, Geir Karlsen, said that the increase of passengers who flew during December showed that travellers could book flights and travel with confidence during the end-of-year holidays.

“Lower demand was factored into our schedules during Christmas and the New Year weekend; therefore, I am pleased to report that load factors are good for December as well. We have seen an effect on general demand from the spread of the Omicron virus and the subsequent new measures and restrictions in Scandinavia and abroad,” Karlsen added.

In addition, he highlighted that even though this has been a very challenging year for the travel industry, Norwegian got named as the most punctual Nordic airline and the third most punctual airline in Europe.

Previously, the European Travel Commission (ETC) revealed that European travel is improving significantly. The European hotels have experienced a spike rate of interest. In regards to this, the CEO of ETC, Eduardo Santander, said that the interest of consumers to stay in hotels or different resorts has increased by 13 per cent, reaching the highest level since September 2020.

The findings also show that more than two-thirds of EU nationals planned a trip in the last quarter of 2021, suggesting people became more confident of travelling abroad despite the travel rules imposed to halt the spread of the Omicron variant.
