France Plans to Ease Travel Rules for Britons

The French government has announced that the travel restrictions imposed against travellers from the United Kingdom will soon be eased.

After the cabinet meeting, which was held yesterday, on January 5, the spokesperson of the French government, Gabriel Attal, said that the authorities have decided to expand the list of compelling reasons under which the UK travellers are permitted entry to France, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Nonetheless, it wasn’t revealed when the eased entry restrictions would enter into force or which persons would be permitted to reach France.

Such an announcement to ease the travel rules for Britons comes after the increased COVID-19 infection cases within France. Previously, France decided to prevent the further spread of the Omicron variant within its territory by restricting entry to those travelling from affected countries.

However, since the Omicron infection cases in France have reached almost the same level as in the UK, the authorities think that it’s no longer to keep tightened entry rules. It is expected that the entry rules might be eased starting from Monday.

Since December 18, all non-essential travel from the UK to France has been banned. Under the current rules, only UK travellers who have a compelling reason for travelling to France, including French legal residents, those travelling for urgent family matters, as well as those who need to carry out essential tasks, are permitted entry.

The category of travellers who are permitted entry to France from the UK needs to follow strict entry rules. At the moment, everyone, including fully vaccinated Britons, must present a negative PCR or rapid antigen test result taken within 24 hours before arrival in France.

Apart from the testing requirement, travellers from the UK are required to go into self-isolation as soon as they enter France. However, the quarantine period can be ended after 48 hours if a negative test result is provided.

In addition, everyone is obliged to register their entry prior to their trip as well as fill out a British entry form before returning to the UK.

France has been registering increased COVID-19 infection cases. Only yesterday, France registered more than 332,000 new infection cases in the last 24 hours. The number of hospitalisations and deaths has also increased.

Previously, the French tourism bosses urged the government to ease the travel rules imposed against the Britons. According to them, the current rules are unnecessary as they are weakening the country’s industry.
