5.9 million passengers travelled through Greek airports in May alone, showing a 370.7 per cent increase compared to 2021 and a 3.4 per cent increase in aircraft traffic compared to 2019 levels, the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has revealed.
According to a press release issued by the authority, 48,498 flights were operated in May of 2019, in addition to 5.8 million arrivals and departures, which are up by one per cent in the May of 2022, indicating a recovery of air traffic after a two-year-long pandemic and travel restrictions, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Regarding the arrivals of passengers on foreign flights, in 2019, the number stood at 2.3 million, while for the same period of 2022, a 3.2 per cent increase was noticed.
Moreover, 14 million passengers reached Greek airports by May, with the total number of arrivals increased by 377.7 per cent compared to the same month of 2021, when 2.9 million passengers were hosted.
In addition, the country’s airports saw 139,861 flights being operated, with 68,352 being domestic and 71,509 being international, making the number of flights conducted 115.8 per cent higher than in 2021, when 64,823 flights were recorded.
As per 2019 levels, when no pandemic or travel-related restrictions were imposed, the number of flights carried out is only 5.3 per cent below this year, when 147,622 flights were operated. Moreover, the number of passengers recorded in May 2022 is quite close to 2019 levels as it lags behind those rates by only 14 per cent or about 2.2 million passengers short.
“The total number of passengers handled amounted to 5,927,281, recording an increase of 370.7 per cent compared to the corresponding period of 2021 where 1,259,340 passengers had been handled. Flights to all airports in the country amounted to 50,171, of which 18,293 were domestic and 31,878 international, recording an increase of 143.1 per cent, compared to the corresponding period of May 2021, where 20,638 flights were operated,” the press release reads.
Moreover, for the arrivals of passenger flights in May 2022, a 530 per cent increase was recorded, corresponding to 2,433,492 passengers, compared to the same month of 2021 when the arrivals abroad stood at 386,243 passengers.
The Bank of Greece has revealed that the number of international travellers recorded in Greece throughout April has increased by 884 per cent compared to the previous year, indicating the strong summer season awaiting the Mediterranean country.
“There is no doubt that the numbers and data are very good so far. But nevertheless, I tell everyone that we will make a fund at the end of the year and after the tourist season is over, ” the Tourism Minister, Vassilis Kikilias, said.
