Opening its doors to more than six million tourists since the beginning of the year has been the top achievement for Greece since the country managed to welcome one of the highest numbers of tourists compared to the majority of the European countries.
Considering this fact, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has applauded the Greek government for the performance and safe reopening of tourism this year, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
According to the Communications Executive for WTTC, Elena Corina Rodriguez, Greece has established a safe travel environment for visitors. She also noted that the country reached about 86 per cent of the arrivals the country had during the pre-pandemic times.
“It was one of the first countries to announce that it would receive visitors who were fully vaccinated or could show a negative PCR to pass through the country’s gates. Greece was the country that encouraged the safe arrival of travellers, as a result of the general preparation of the country,” she said for Greek news agency ANA.
The representative Rodrigues also mentioned that Greece has become among the most popular destinations in the EU, with Germans and Britons accounting for the most tourists. As she stated, the travel and tourism sector contributed by 20.8 per cent to the country’s GDP and created more than one-fifth of all jobs.
As SchengenVisaInfo.com reported, Greece saw a sharp rise in tourist numbers this season, which is expected to generate about €12 billion by the end of the year. In an interview, the Greek minister of tourism, Vasilis Kikilia, noted that an increase in tourism was also noted on American travellers. However, Kikilia also said the government had to persistently refuse to impose more stringent entry requirements for Americans, despite the EU advising otherwise.
However, this isn’t the first time travel organizations are praising Greece, as the latter was previously estimated as “the champion of tourism” for handling reopening and tourism very carefully.
“In fact, in July, for the first time, our country surpassed France itself as a favourite destination for the French. That is, the French travelled more to Greece than to their own country. This is a very important development,” Greek Minister of Tourism, Haris Theocharis, said.
Moreover, he noted that domestic tourism had also increased, provided that the government opened its program “Tourism for All,” which will be valid until December 31. According to this program, all Greeks will be able to have the chance of taking a vacation in the country, as data shows that the majority of Greeks do not take regular vacations.
Another advantage that Greece put to use this year was the fact that the authorities recognized the highest number of vaccines worldwide, facilitating travellers experience and allowing them to visit Greece at much more ease.
