Even though European travellers have not been able to travel to the US for over a year and a half now, they should be prepared for the entry ban to remain effective for quite some time, an expert has warned, claiming that the US ban against arrivals from the EU may get extended until the midterm elections of 2022.
According to an article written by Edward Alden, a columnist at Foreign Policy, and published by the latter, if the authorities are trying to protect Biden’s political flank, the border restrictions could remain frozen until the elections in 2022. Such an approach has been seen as a thoughtless and unscientific policy that is doing more damage as each day passes by.
The same emphasised that it is against one’s common sense why travellers who have been fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 disease and who are travelling to the US from countries with much lower infection cases are being denied entry.
Earlier in July, the President of the US, Joe Biden, suggested that the country could soon follow the example of the EU and lift the EU ban imposed on EU travellers, which has been remaining in place for over 17 months now. Nonetheless, such a decision hasn’t been taken yet, even though many organisations and governments have criticised the US authorities.
Based on the figures provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), as of September 15, the US has detected a total of 40,804,998 COVID-19 infection cases. In addition, only during the last 24 hours, the country has registered 129,420 new cases.
This is way higher than the number of infection cases that the European countries have been registering for 10,000 inhabitants, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
As a result, following the recommendation from the Council of the European Union, several EU countries decided to ban entry to travellers from the US. Italy was the first country that followed suit from the EU. The Italian authorities removed the US from the list of epidemiologically safe countries and imposed restrictions against those who were permitted entry under certain conditions.
Except for Italy, Bulgaria has also tightened the entry rules for Americans since the country has been added to its red category. As such, only travellers from the US who are exempt from the entry ban can enter the territory of Bulgaria.
Following the example of other EU Member States, Denmark also announced that since September 6, the country had banned entry to all unvaccinated Americans. However, it has been emphasised that those reaching Denmark for absolutely necessary reasons will still be allowed to enter the country.
Authorities in the Netherlands have also revealed that travellers from the US are now required to present a negative COVID-19 test result upon arrival as well as follow a ten-day mandatory quarantine requirement.
